Remembering the Child

I chose to interview my mom to see how I behaved as a child and to see what my interests were.

Me: Mom, how was I as a child?
Mom: Curious, inquisitive, and you loved anything to do with nature.
Me: What did I like to do as a child?
Mom: You liked me to read books to you, you liked to play in your papaw’s garage with tools, and you liked to take things apart, and build things with wood and nails.
Me: What was my favorite story?
Mom: Your favorite story was the very hungry caterpillar, you had it memorized by the time you were three.
Me: Was there anywhere that I liked to go as a child?
Mom: Your favorite place to go was Memaw and Papaw’s (my great grandparents), and you also loved to go to the beach.
Me: What were some of my favorite foods?
Mom: You liked to eat fried hot dogs, chicken legs, boiled potatoes, and macaroni and cheese.
Me: What was my behavior like?
Mom: You were very well behaved, you were calm, you liked to sit and play by yourself, and you had a very good imagination. Even if you didn’t have toys, you could sit and play. You liked to draw.
Me: What were some of my favorite toys?
Mom: You liked miniature tanks, bugs, creatures of all kinds. Also you love stuffed snakes.
Me: What did I want to be when I grew up?
Mom: At first you wanted to be a train engineer, then you wanted to be a herpetologist and study reptiles.
Mom: and your favorite word was “actually, …”

Even in my childhood, I was interested by all sorts of nature and the outdoors. Which still is reflected in me today, because I want to study the environment and become an attorney who protects it.

“Where I’m from” Poem

I am from a long, winding gravel driveway
that has been endlessly paced
in hopes of conquering inner fears.
I am from the soft wind blowing across a field,
where the skittish deer hide from human eyes.
For in the fall, they are not safe.

I am from a nose buried in a textbook,
taking in every word
in hopes of making the best grade.
I am from long hours spent in a silent room,
where only the scratching of a pencil
and the flipping of pages can be heard.
Where success is a must
and the question is only a matter of “how”.

I am from home cooked meals
that were lovingly made with soft hands,
and carry an aroma throughout the house,
making the mouth water and the stomach growl.

I am from simplicity.
Where dreams become a part of the future;
and it all started here.

Let Me Introduce Myself

Dear Reader,

You may be wondering why my blog title is FairlyOddTurner. My intention for this was to both describe myself and also make the reference to the 90’s cartoon “Fairly Odd Parents”, which was a part of my childhood and also is a part of my name. This I believe has a great overall relation, for I am not what you could call a “normal person”. When most teenagers my age prefer to wear a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, I enjoy being able to dress up in suits, and love to observe the classier wear in stores instead of finding the latest fad. I love the idea of the 50’s classy outfit where most gentlemen would dress in a suit. I believe it was a more simple and classic time, and I honestly wish that I could travel back in time to live during that period.

I am the oldest of two sons, and am the head of the household now that I live only with my mother and brother. My mom is a photographer and also a teacher at the local community college. She does her best to provide for us now that my worthless father no longer is around. My brother looks up to me and I always have to lead a good example. This is probably why I work so hard in everything that I do, especially in school. I also love helping people and plan to become an environmental lawyer to help preserve the environment in which we live for future generations to enjoy. I have began to overcome my fear of speaking in front of people and now am more socially outgoing than before. I believe this to be a necessary development that I need to make in order to become a successful attorney. I apply myself in every way in order to guarantee that I will surpass all of my goals of success.

Although I do not play any sports and spend most of my time working on schoolwork, I do have many varied hobbies and interests. First of all I have a passion for cooking, and love to learn how to cook all kinds of dishes. Second, I love the outdoors and enjoy a variety of things such as hiking, fishing, and kayaking. I believe it is good to have a relationship with the outside nature that we co-inhabit with as humans. Most of all, I hold my friends and family close, and enjoy spending time with them. I always try to be the best friend, and family member possible because without friends and family to enjoy life with, it is meaningless.

There is much more about me that you will continue to learn, and I hope to inspire you and many others to strive to be the best that you can possibly be.

                                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                                   Alex Turner
